What each tool costs.
Reading your data over MCP is free. Only tools that generate content or run a check spend credits — the same price as in the app, and the tool tells the assistant what it charged.
Credits over MCP work exactly as they do in the dashboard. Every read is free, a handful of tools that generate content or run a check spend credits at the same price you'd pay in the app, and each paid tool reports what it charged so nothing surprises you.
Credits over MCP come from the same balance as the app. A check you run from chat draws down the same pool as one you run in the dashboard — there is no separate MCP allowance.
What's free
Every read tool is free, and each returns the full dashboard view rather than a headline — listing your brands, reading briefs, checking AI-visibility, SEO and traffic, and reading content, competitors and citations. Reads keep working even at a zero balance, so your assistant can always answer a question about your account.
A few tools that don't read data are free as well:

What costs credits
These are the only tools that spend credits. The price matches the app, and the tool tells the assistant what it charged after it runs.

Ask before you spend
You never get billed by surprise. Ask "how much will this cost" and the assistant can call quote_ai_visibility_check — which is free — or read the tool's stated cost before running anything. After a paid tool runs, it reports what it charged.
An AI-visibility check is priced per answer, and the answer count is your tracked prompts multiplied by the engines that run, so a bigger prompt set costs more. Quote it first to see the exact number before you commit.
BYOK and credits
On Pro and Agency you can bring your own AI key (BYOK). With BYOK connected, the credit cost of AI content generation and AI-visibility checks drops to zero — you're paying your own provider instead of us.
To be clear about what BYOK does not cover: it applies only to the AI generation and checks it powers, not to everything. Adding a competitor still costs credits, and other non-AI costs are unaffected. BYOK zeroes the AI generation, not the whole account.
Limits on spend
Two things bound how much a connection can spend:
- Your plan's monthly credit grant. It's shared across the whole account and every feature — app and MCP alike — so credits spent from chat and credits spent in the dashboard come out of the same monthly grant.
- An optional per-token daily cap. Off unless you set one, it stops a single token from spending more than a set number of credits in a day — a useful guard for a token you share with a client or automation. Set it when you create or edit a token; see access tokens.
